Layout guidelines
| Element | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Main path | 3 to 4 ft (0.9 to 1.2 m) wide, so two people can walk side by side |
| Raised beds | No wider than 4 ft (1.2 m), so you can reach the middle |
| Vegetables | Place them where they get at least 6 hours of sun |
| Large trees | Keep them well away from the house. Check the size the tree reaches when grown. |
| Seating area | About 10 × 10 ft (3 × 3 m) fits a table for four |
| Privacy fence | Usually 6 ft (1.8 m). Local rules may limit front-yard height. |
Think in zones
Split your yard into zones: a sitting area, a planting area, a play or open lawn area, and a service area for bins and tools. Connect them with paths. Draw each zone as its own shape in Planscaper, then adjust the sizes until the layout feels balanced.
Not sure how much lawn or fence you need? Use the material calculator for sod, fence panels and concrete.
