Deck size guide
| Use | Typical size | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Bistro set for 2 | 6 × 8 ft (1.8 × 2.4 m) | 48 sq ft |
| Dining table for 4 | 10 × 10 ft (3 × 3 m) | 100 sq ft |
| Dining for 6 plus a grill | 12 × 16 ft (3.7 × 4.9 m) | 192 sq ft |
| Dining and a lounge area | 16 × 20 ft (4.9 × 6.1 m) | 320 sq ft |
A good rule is to leave about 3 ft (0.9 m) around a table for chairs and walking.
Things to check before you build
- Railings: many codes require a guard rail when the deck surface is more than about 30 inches (76 cm) above the ground.
- Permits: attached or raised decks often need a permit. Ask your local building office.
- Footings: depth depends on your local frost line and soil.
- Joists: spacing depends on the decking material. Follow the manufacturer's guide.
Planscaper is for visualization only. It is not a construction drawing. Always follow local building rules and ask a professional.
